Carl Wiens

: Prince Edward County :

(hahaha I love this image :D)

I was first attracted to Carl Wiens when I found 'Darwin's Progeny' which is a series of science and nature collage's.
He started his career with editorial illustration, now Wiens can boast
a whole host (haha rhymes) of illustrative and design endeavours :
  • Interactive web design
  • Animated character design
  • Print illustration
  • Cover art (magazines)
  • Book covers
  • Textbooks
  • Package design
and his list of clients include :
  • New York Times
  • Esquire
  • The Wall Street Journal
  • Fortune
  • Owl and many more.
Carl Wiens mainly works digitally, but his sketches are lovely, really clear and his concepts are clever and easily understood. His website has a really nice work section which shows examples of his working method, sketches and final pieces.
Technology also helped wiens, he moved to the country getting the best of both worlds and being more involved in with his personal life.

Wiens has worked with changing trends and established himself as a reliable, professional illustrator, from hand delivering art work to taking commissions and delivering work without even meeting the client.
Wiens has quite a few varied styles and yes some of his work is reminiscent or more accurately IS clip art (stock illustration) but overlooking that, his more recent work like the fun RETRO-BOTS. These images bring together weird and wonderful parts of machinery to create a juxtaposed "machine".
I also love his use of collage, with text, relevant symbols and shapes. The way he uses collage in the 'Data Space' images reminds me of a way i have worked in the past, i think this technique maybe worth revisiting!
